Lawyer Calls for Compensation to Prosecutor's Family After Fatal Attack
Lawyer Kadhila Amoomo urges the Ministry of Justice to compensate the family of late prosecutor Justine Shiweda, who died following an attack linked to her official duties.
Lawyer Kadhila Amoomo has called on the Ministry of Justice and Labour Relations to initiate compensation for the family of the late Ondangwa prosecutor, Justine Shiweda. Shiweda, 30, passed away on Saturday at a Windhoek hospital after succumbing to injuries sustained from a shooting and acid attack in October 2025.
In a social media post, Amoomo described Shiweda's death as a significant loss for the legal profession. He stated that the ministry's failure to protect Shiweda necessitates immediate reparations for her family, emphasizing the welfare of her children.
Amoomo further highlighted that Shiweda's death has unsettled the judiciary and raised serious concerns about prosecutors' safety. He cautioned against allowing fear to define public service in the justice sector, asserting that future generations should not associate prosecutorial roles with life-threatening risks.
Shiweda was attacked on 17 October 2025, when assailants shot her in the legs and doused her with a corrosive substance outside her home in Ondangwa. The attack occurred as she was preparing to take her children to school.
Investigations revealed that the assault was linked to Shiweda's official duties in a high-profile criminal case. The suspected mastermind, Abner Mateus, was already in police custody at the time of the incident.
The Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on both Shiweda and the integrity of Namibia's justice system. IPC spokesperson Imms Nashinge emphasized that such acts of violence have no place in a democratic society and called for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Prosecutor General Martha Imalwa expressed concern over the safety of state prosecutors, noting that the increasing trend of crime in the country puts judicial officers at risk. She highlighted the need for enhanced security measures to protect those upholding the law.
In response to the incident, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah addressed the safety and security of judicial officers, emphasizing that no officer of the court should perform their duties under fear, intimidation, or threat. She welcomed the establishment of a task force to review security challenges within the judiciary.
The case has been escalated from attempted murder to murder following Shiweda's death. Oshana police commander Naftal Sakaria confirmed that the case would be updated accordingly.
Several arrests have been made in connection with the attack, including that of Dr. Fillemon Nakanduungile, a medical doctor from Ondangwa. Nakanduungile appeared in the Ondangwa Magistrate's Court facing charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
The legal community continues to mourn Shiweda's loss, advocating for improved security measures to ensure the safety of judicial officers and uphold the integrity of Namibia's justice system.
