U.S. Sets June Deadline for Ukraine-Russia Peace Agreement

The United States has set a June deadline for Ukraine and Russia to reach an agreement to end the nearly four-year conflict, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He indicated that if the deadline is not met, the Trump administration may apply pressure on both parties to adhere to the timeline.

Zelenskyy stated that the U.S. has proposed hosting the next round of trilateral talks in Miami next week, marking the first such meeting on American soil. Ukraine has confirmed its participation in these discussions.

The announcement follows recent U.S.-brokered talks in Abu Dhabi, which failed to yield significant progress due to conflicting demands. Russia continues to insist on Ukraine's withdrawal from the Donbas region, a condition that Kyiv firmly rejects.

In the meantime, Russian forces have intensified attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Overnight strikes involving more than 400 drones and approximately 40 missiles targeted the energy grid, generation facilities, and distribution networks. These assaults have forced nuclear power plants to reduce output, leading to increased power deficits and extended outages across the country.

Zelenskyy also mentioned that Russia has presented a $12 trillion economic proposal, referred to as the "Dmitriev package" after Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev. This proposal is part of broader negotiations that include potential bilateral economic deals with the United States.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, significant challenges remain, particularly concerning the management of the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and differing views on establishing a free economic zone in the Donbas region. Previous ceasefire agreements, including those aimed at protecting energy infrastructure, have been short-lived, with violations occurring shortly after implementation.
