Newly Discovered Comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) Approaches Perihelion

सारांश

Comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS), a member of the Kreutz sungrazer group, is set to make a close approach to the Sun on April 4, 2026, with potential visibility to the naked eye.

Comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) was discovered on January 13, 2026, by the MAPS team—Alain Maury, Georges Attard, Daniel Parrott, and Florian Signoret—at the AMACS1 Observatory in Chile. This comet belongs to the Kreutz sungrazer group, known for their close approaches to the Sun. At the time of discovery, it was approximately 2.06 astronomical units from the Sun, making it the most distant Kreutz sungrazer identified to date.

C/2026 A1 is projected to reach perihelion on April 4, 2026, passing about 0.0054 AU (approximately 810,000 kilometers) from the Sun's surface. This close approach raises the possibility of the comet becoming visible to the naked eye, depending on its behavior as it nears the Sun. Historically, some Kreutz comets have disintegrated due to intense solar heat and tidal forces, while others have survived and displayed significant brightness.

Astronomers are closely monitoring C/2026 A1 to determine its potential visibility and behavior during perihelion. If the comet remains intact, it could provide a notable celestial event in early April 2026. Observations will continue to assess its trajectory and brightness as it approaches the Sun.
