Norwegian Crown Princess's Son Denies Rape Charges as Trial Commences
Marius Borg Høiby, son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including four counts of rape, as his trial begins in Oslo.
Marius Borg Høiby, the 29-year-old son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit, appeared in Oslo District Court on Tuesday, facing 38 charges, including four counts of rape, domestic violence, and drug offenses. Høiby pleaded not guilty to the most serious charges but admitted to lesser offenses such as offensive sexual behavior and traffic violations.
Lead prosecutor Sturla Henriksbø emphasized that Høiby would be treated like any other Norwegian citizen, stating, "He will not be handled tougher or milder because he is part of this family."
The trial, expected to last until March 19, has drawn significant media attention and scrutiny, raising concerns about the impact of public exposure on the legal process and on the victims.
Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit have stated they will not attend the court proceedings but will follow the case through media reports.
The case has been described as one of the most serious crises to hit the Norwegian royal family in peacetime, though Høiby does not hold a royal title or official duties.
