Virginia Man Convicted in Double Murder Linked to Au Pair Affair

摘要

Brendan Banfield was found guilty of murdering his wife and another man in a scheme involving the family's au pair.

A Fairfax County jury has convicted Brendan Banfield of aggravated murder for the deaths of his wife, Christine Banfield, and Joseph Ryan in February 2023. Prosecutors alleged that Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, conspired with the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, with whom he was having an affair, to orchestrate the killings.

According to the prosecution, Banfield and Magalhães created a fake social media profile impersonating Christine to lure Ryan to the Banfield home under the pretense of a consensual sexual encounter. Once Ryan arrived, they staged a scene to make it appear that he had attacked Christine, providing a cover for her murder. Magalhães testified that Banfield shot Ryan in the head, and she shot him in the chest. Banfield then allegedly stabbed Christine and smeared her blood on Ryan to support the fabricated scenario.

Defense attorney John Carroll challenged the credibility of Magalhães' testimony, arguing that she fabricated the story to secure a plea deal. Carroll also noted that Banfield's DNA was not found on the knife used to kill Christine. Despite these arguments, the jury deliberated for nearly nine hours over two days before reaching a guilty verdict.

Banfield was also convicted of child endangerment, as his 4-year-old daughter was present in the home during the killings. He faces a potential life sentence at his sentencing hearing scheduled for May 8. Magalhães, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2024 and testified against Banfield, may be released with time served and return to Brazil.
