President Trump Nominates Kevin Warsh as Federal Reserve Chair
President Donald Trump has nominated Kevin Warsh to succeed Jerome Powell as Chair of the Federal Reserve, pending Senate confirmation.
President Donald Trump has nominated Kevin Warsh to succeed Jerome Powell as Chair of the Federal Reserve. Warsh, 55, previously served as a Fed governor from 2006 to 2011 and played a significant role during the 2008 financial crisis. He is currently a lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business and a fellow at the Hoover Institution.
Trump announced the nomination on his social media platform, stating, "I have known Kevin for a long period of time and have no doubt that he will go down as one of the GREAT Fed chairmen, maybe the best."
Warsh's nomination aligns with Trump's push for lower interest rates. However, Warsh has previously advocated for overhauling the Fed and reducing its balance sheet, positions that may conflict with Trump's desire for looser financial conditions.
The nomination requires Senate confirmation. Republican Senator Thom Tillis has indicated he will oppose Warsh's nomination until the federal investigation into Powell is resolved.
Following the announcement, gold and silver prices experienced significant declines, with gold futures falling 9% to $4,901 per ounce, marking the largest daily decline since the early 1980s. Analysts attributed the drop to investor concerns over the potential erosion of the Fed's independence.
