Stratford Resident Embarks on 332km Tanzania Cycle for Dental Charity

Stratford resident Maia Jones is set to cycle 332 kilometers across Tanzania to raise funds for Bridge2Aid, a charity dedicated to training rural health workers in emergency dental care. The journey, commencing on February 2, aims to address the critical shortage of dental services in the country.

In preparation, Jones has cycled over 2,800 kilometers since March 2025. She recently completed a 48-kilometer training ride around Stratford, stopping at ten local dental practices to symbolize the unity of the dental community in supporting this cause.

Jones highlighted the pressing need for dental care in Tanzania, noting that only 0.5% of children have ever seen a dentist. With a population of 70 million and just 600 dentists—most based in urban areas—rural communities are particularly underserved.

Joining a team of 19 cyclists, including her partner, dentist Bob To, Jones aims to raise £40,000 for Bridge2Aid. The charity focuses on training local health workers to provide emergency dental treatment, thereby creating sustainable solutions for communities lacking access to dental care.

Jones's motivation stems from her late father, Allan Hargreaves, who was known for his adventurous spirit, including mountain climbing at 69 and long-distance cycling. She also credits her partner Bob, who has previously volunteered on dental missions abroad, as an inspiration for this endeavor.
