Severe Ice Conditions Disrupt Ferry Services to Estonian Islands

Summary

Estonia's islands are experiencing the worst ice conditions in a decade, leading to ferry cancellations and residents resorting to alternative means for essential supplies.

Estonia's islands are facing the most severe ice conditions in ten years, resulting in significant disruptions to ferry services and compelling residents to seek alternative methods for obtaining essential supplies.

On Friday evening, ferry departures on the Rohuküla–Heltermaa route, connecting the mainland to Hiiumaa, were canceled due to ice and low sea levels. Although services resumed on Saturday, crossings are expected to take longer, and vehicle weight restrictions may be imposed, according to TS Laevad, the route's operator.

Guldar Kivro, head of shipping operations at TS Laevad, noted that the current conditions in the Väinameri strait are unprecedented in the company's decade-long history. He highlighted that slushy sea ice, broken up by ferry traffic and then re-compacting to depths of up to 60 centimeters, is a primary challenge.

The ferry Regula, built in 1971, is currently servicing the route alongside the newer Leiger. While Friday afternoon sailings were canceled, both vessels are now operational, albeit with potential delays and restrictions.

Residents of smaller islands, such as Abruka, have been particularly affected. With regular ferry services halted, some have resorted to traversing the frozen sea on all-terrain vehicles to procure groceries and other necessities. Island caretaker Rein Lember emphasized that while this ice crossing serves as a temporary lifeline, it carries inherent risks until ferry services can be restored.

Similarly, on Vilsandi island, a hovercraft has been deployed several times a week to maintain a transport link to Saaremaa, ensuring continued grocery deliveries and support for islanders. Residents acknowledge the dangers associated with ice travel but rely on these measures to sustain connections during the harsh winter conditions.
