Major Winter Storm to Impact Carolinas and Virginia with Heavy Snow and Coastal Flooding

A significant winter storm is forecasted to impact the East Coast this weekend, bringing heavy snowfall and coastal flooding to parts of the Carolinas and Virginia. The storm is expected to develop off the Carolina coast on Saturday, moving into the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions by Sunday into early Monday. Snowfall could begin as early as late Thursday into Friday across parts of the southern Appalachians and South Carolina.

Forecasters indicate that heavy snow is likely across much of the Southern Appalachians, Carolinas, and southern Mid-Atlantic, with some areas potentially receiving around a foot of snow. Elizabeth City, North Carolina, for example, is forecasted to receive approximately 12.3 inches, which would rank among the five highest depths recorded there. The Raleigh area and regions west toward Winston-Salem and Greensboro could see six to ten inches of snow. Parts of southeastern Virginia, including Newport News and Wakefield, may also experience up to ten inches.

In addition to snowfall, the storm is expected to bring powerful winds, large waves, and coastal flooding to the affected regions. Cold air is anticipated to persist across much of the eastern United States through next week, with some areas as far south as Florida experiencing their coldest temperatures in years.

Residents in the impacted areas are advised to prepare for hazardous travel conditions and potential power outages. Authorities recommend staying updated with local weather forecasts and heeding any advisories or warnings issued by local officials.
