12-Year-Old Boy Dies After Shark Attack in Sydney Harbour

Summary

A 12-year-old boy has died following a shark attack in Sydney Harbour, marking one of four such incidents in two days.

A 12-year-old boy has died in hospital after being attacked by a shark in Sydney Harbour last weekend. The boy, identified as Nico Antic, was bitten on both legs on 18 January while jumping from rocks into the water near Nielsen Park in Vaucluse. His parents, Lorena and Juan Antic, confirmed his death in a statement, describing Nico as a "happy, friendly, and sporty young boy with the most kind and generous spirit." They expressed gratitude to first responders and medical staff for their care.

The attack occurred as Nico and his friends were swimming outside the shark net enclosure. His friends pulled him from the water, and he was transported to Sydney Children's Hospital in critical condition.

This incident was one of four shark attacks recorded in New South Wales within a 48-hour period. On 19 January, an 11-year-old boy's surfboard was bitten at Dee Why Beach, though he was unharmed. Later that day, a surfer in his 20s was critically injured after being bitten on the leg at North Steyne Beach. On 20 January, a 39-year-old man sustained minor injuries from a shark bite at Point Plomer.

Authorities have linked the increase in shark activity to recent heavy rainfall, which has led to murky water conditions that attract sharks. As a precaution, several beaches were closed, and officials advised swimmers to avoid the ocean and use local pools instead.

Nico's death is the third shark-related fatality in Sydney in recent months. In September, a surfer was killed by a large shark at Long Reef Beach, and in November, a woman was fatally attacked by a bull shark north of Sydney.
