Major Winter Storm to Impact Eastern U.S. with Snow, Ice, and Extreme Cold

A significant winter storm is forecast to affect the eastern two-thirds of the United States this weekend, bringing heavy snow, ice, and potentially record-breaking cold temperatures. Meteorologists anticipate that approximately half of the U.S. population will experience accumulating ice, sleet, or snow. Alex Lamers, a meteorologist with the Weather Prediction Center, noted that the storm is likely to fall into "the echelon of unusually impactful storms," adding, "It's not something you see every winter."

The storm is expected to develop on Friday as it emerges from the Southern Rockies, producing snow in New Mexico and Colorado before spreading into the plains of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Winter storm warnings have already been issued in parts of Oklahoma. On Saturday, the system is projected to expand significantly, bringing freezing rain, sleet, and snow to Texas, Arkansas, and Tennessee, while snow moves across the Midwest. By Saturday evening, the storm is anticipated to reach Georgia and the Carolinas. On Sunday, the system is forecast to intensify as it moves into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, with temperatures likely to be well below normal in the Plains. Even after the snow clears, brutal cold is expected to settle across the eastern United States from Monday into midweek.

The storm's complex structure will dictate its impact: heavy snow on the northern flank, a core of sleet and freezing rain in the middle, and rain to the south. Forecasters are closely monitoring the storm's trajectory and its interaction with physical features like the Appalachian Mountains, which are already causing last-minute shifts in the forecast.

Residents in the affected regions are advised to prepare for hazardous conditions, including potential power outages and dangerous travel. Authorities are urging caution and recommending that individuals stay informed through official weather updates.
