Surge in Shark Attacks Leads to Beach Closures in New South Wales

Summary

Four shark attacks in three days along Australia's New South Wales coast have prompted authorities to close beaches and advise the public to avoid ocean swimming.

A series of four shark attacks over three days along Australia's New South Wales coast has led to beach closures and public warnings. The latest incident occurred on Tuesday morning at Point Plomer, approximately 290 miles north of Sydney, where a 39-year-old surfer sustained minor injuries after a shark bit his surfboard. He managed to return to shore unaided and was treated at a local hospital.

Earlier attacks included a 12-year-old boy who suffered critical leg injuries on Sunday at Shark Beach in Sydney Harbour. His friends assisted him back to shore, and he remains hospitalized. On Monday, an 11-year-old boy's surfboard was bitten at Dee Why Beach, though he was unharmed. Later that day, a surfer in his 20s was critically injured at North Steyne Beach in Manly.

In response, authorities have closed beaches along Sydney's northern coastline and deployed electronic drumlines to monitor shark activity. Recent heavy rainfall has resulted in murky water conditions, which experts say can attract bull sharks. Surf Life Saving NSW Chief Executive Steven Pearce advised,

"If you're thinking about going for a swim, think of going to a local pool because at this stage, we're advising that beaches are unsafe."

These incidents follow previous fatal shark attacks in the region, including the death of a 57-year-old surfer at Long Reef Beach in September and a 25-year-old Swiss tourist at Kylies Beach in November.
