Kalshi Surpasses Polymarket in Prediction Market Dominance Amid Regulatory Scrutiny
Kalshi has overtaken Polymarket as the leading prediction market platform, capturing over 60% of global market share, while facing increased regulatory scrutiny and legislative proposals addressing insider trading concerns.
Kalshi has emerged as the dominant force in the prediction market industry, surpassing its main competitor, Polymarket. As of early January 2026, Kalshi accounted for approximately 66.4% of global trades, a significant increase from its 3.1% share a year prior. This growth has been driven by federal regulatory approval, integration with retail platforms like Robinhood, and a strategic focus on sports betting markets.
In the week ending January 11, 2026, Kalshi recorded over $2 billion in weekly notional volume for the first time. Notably, 91.1% of this volume was concentrated in sports markets, reflecting a shift towards the financialization of sports betting. The introduction of "Combos," Kalshi's peer-to-peer version of sports parlays, has contributed significantly to this surge.
Polymarket, which previously led the market, has faced challenges due to regulatory issues. After being banned from serving U.S. residents in 2022, Polymarket acquired QCEX, a regulated derivatives exchange, to re-enter the U.S. market. Despite these efforts, Kalshi's market share has continued to grow, reaching 62.2% by September 2025.
The rapid expansion of prediction markets has attracted regulatory attention. A recent $400,000 payout from a bet on the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has raised concerns about insider trading. In response, Representative Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) introduced the Public Integrity in Financial Prediction Markets Act of 2026, aiming to criminalize insider trading on these platforms, particularly by government officials using privileged information.
As prediction markets continue to grow, platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket are navigating complex regulatory landscapes while expanding their offerings to meet increasing user demand.
