NASA Conducts First Medical Evacuation from ISS, Crew Returns Safely to Earth

Summary

NASA's Crew-11 mission concluded early as four astronauts returned to Earth due to a crew member's medical issue, marking the agency's first medical evacuation from the International Space Station.

NASA's Crew-11 mission concluded prematurely as four astronauts returned to Earth due to a crew member's medical issue, marking the agency's first medical evacuation from the International Space Station (ISS). The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, carrying NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, Japan's Kimiya Yui, and Russia's Oleg Platonov, splashed down safely off the coast of San Diego at 3:41 a.m. ET on Thursday.

The mission, which began in August 2025, was originally scheduled to last until late February. However, on January 7, NASA postponed a planned spacewalk due to a "medical concern" involving an ISS crew member. The following day, the agency announced the decision to bring the Crew-11 astronauts back to Earth earlier than planned.

NASA has not disclosed the identity of the affected astronaut or specific details about the medical issue, citing privacy concerns. The agency emphasized that the situation was not an emergency but required the crew member to receive proper care and diagnostic testing on Earth.

Following the early departure of Crew-11, the ISS is temporarily staffed by NASA astronaut Christopher Williams and Russian cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergey Mikayev. NASA is considering advancing the launch of Crew-12, originally planned for mid-February, to minimize the reduced operation window.

Despite the early return, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman stated that the Crew-11 mission was "very successful," with the crew spending over 850 hours on scientific studies, including research on bone loss in microgravity and the long-term storage of cryogenic fluids in space.

This event marks the first time in NASA's history that a space mission has been cut short due to a medical issue, although similar situations have occurred during Soviet space station missions.
