Federal Officer Shoots Man in Minneapolis Amid Rising Tensions
A federal law enforcement officer shot a man in Minneapolis during a traffic stop, escalating tensions following a recent fatal shooting by an ICE agent.
A federal law enforcement officer shot a man in Minneapolis on Wednesday evening during a traffic stop, intensifying tensions in a city already unsettled by a recent fatal shooting involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the incident occurred around 6:50 p.m. local time when officers conducted a "targeted traffic stop" of an individual identified as "an illegal alien from Venezuela." The individual reportedly fled the stop, crashed into a parked vehicle, and then fled on foot. When a pursuing officer caught up, the individual allegedly resisted and assaulted the officer. DHS stated that two other individuals emerged from a nearby apartment and attacked the officer with a snow shovel and broom handle. "Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired defensive shots to defend his life," DHS said in a statement. The initial subject was hit in the leg.
Both the officer and the individual who was shot were taken to the hospital. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara described the injuries of the person shot as non-life-threatening. Following the shooting, the three individuals reportedly barricaded themselves inside the apartment but were later taken into custody.
The incident sparked protests at the scene, with demonstrators confronting federal agents. O'Hara characterized the gathering as an "unlawful assembly" and reported that some individuals threw fireworks and rocks at officers. "People need to leave. This is already a very tense situation and we do not need this to escalate any further," O'Hara urged during a news conference.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed concern over the escalating federal enforcement actions in the city. "There's still a lot that we don't know at this time," Frey said. "But what I can tell you for certain is that this is not sustainable. This is an impossible situation that our city is being put in." He urged residents to protest peacefully and avoid confrontations with federal officers. "And for anyone that is taking the bait tonight -- stop," he said. "That is not helpful. Go home. We cannot counter Donald Trump's chaos with our own brand of chaos."
The shooting comes amid heightened federal immigration enforcement in Minneapolis, including the recent fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent. These events have led to widespread protests and calls for accountability regarding federal agents' actions in the city.
