California Investigates Elon Musk's xAI Over AI-Generated Explicit Images
California's Attorney General has launched an investigation into Elon Musk's xAI following reports that its AI tool, Grok, has been used to create nonconsensual explicit images of women and children.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta has initiated an investigation into xAI, the company behind the AI tool Grok, amid allegations that it has been used to generate nonconsensual, sexually explicit images of women and children.
"The avalanche of reports detailing the non-consensual, sexually explicit material that xAI has produced and posted online in recent weeks is shocking," Bonta stated.
Grok, developed by Elon Musk's xAI, includes an image-generation feature that allows users to modify existing photos. Critics argue that insufficient safeguards have led to the creation and public posting of explicit deepfake images, including those depicting minors.
In response to the controversy, xAI announced that Grok will now restrict its ability to edit images to depict individuals in revealing clothing in regions where such content is illegal.
The European Commission has also opened inquiries into Grok's algorithms and potential dissemination of illegal content, ordering Musk's company to preserve documents related to the chatbot's development.
Elon Musk has denied awareness of Grok generating explicit images of minors, stating, "I am not aware of any naked underage images generated by Grok. Literally zero."
The investigation underscores growing concerns over the misuse of AI technologies and the need for robust safeguards to prevent the creation and dissemination of harmful content.
