Sprinkles Cupcakes Ceases Operations After Two Decades
Sprinkles Cupcakes, renowned for its 'cupcake ATMs,' has closed all locations nationwide after 20 years in business.
Sprinkles Cupcakes, known for its innovative 'cupcake ATMs,' has ceased operations across the United States after two decades in business. The closure was confirmed by founder Candace Nelson, who announced that December 31, 2025, marked the company's final day.
Nelson, who started the bakery in 2005 in Beverly Hills, California, sold the company to private equity firm KarpReilly LLC in 2012. Despite her departure, she expressed a deep personal connection to the brand, stating, "Even though I sold the company over a decade ago, I still have such a personal connection to it, and this isn't how I thought the story would go."
The sudden shutdown has left employees and customers surprised. Reports indicate that staff received minimal notice before the closures, leading to frustration among workers. The company's website has removed all operational locations and ceased online sales.
Sprinkles Cupcakes gained national recognition for its 24-hour cupcake-dispensing machines, which became a viral sensation on social media platforms like TikTok. At its peak, the company operated over 20 locations and numerous cupcake ATMs nationwide.
Neither KarpReilly LLC nor Nelson provided specific reasons for the closure. The shutdown contributes to a broader trend of private equity investments in the restaurant industry, which saw $94.5 billion in investments between 2014 and 2024.
