Washington Monument Illuminated to Launch America's 250th Anniversary Celebrations
A six-night projection display on the Washington Monument begins New Year's Eve, marking the start of year-long events commemorating the United States' 250th anniversary.
On New Year's Eve, the Washington Monument was illuminated with a six-night projection display, marking the commencement of year-long events celebrating the United States' 250th anniversary. The event, organized by Freedom 250, began at 7 p.m. Eastern Time and featured projections narrating the nation's history, including themes of discovery, independence, and future aspirations.
Keith Krach, CEO of Freedom 250, stated,
"The illumination of the Washington Monument marks the beginning of a momentous year for our nation — 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence."
The projections are scheduled to run nightly from December 31 through January 5, with displays starting at 7 p.m. and concluding at 11:30 p.m., except on New Year's Eve when the event extended past midnight. Fireworks displays are planned for January 1 at 12:01 a.m. and January 5 at 7:55 p.m.
This illumination serves as the inaugural event in a series of national celebrations planned throughout 2026 to commemorate the semiquincentennial of the United States. Future events include a Great American State Fair on the National Mall and a parade of ships from more than 30 countries in New York Harbor for the Fourth of July.
