Virginia Man Confesses to Planting Pipe Bombs Near Political Party Headquarters
Brian Cole Jr. admitted to placing pipe bombs near the DNC and RNC headquarters on January 5, 2021, expressing discontent with both political parties.
Brian Cole Jr., a 30-year-old from Woodbridge, Virginia, has confessed to planting pipe bombs near the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters on January 5, 2021. In a detailed interview with investigators following his December 4 arrest, Cole admitted to the act, expressing dissatisfaction with both political parties. He stated that he was not targeting the congressional certification of the 2020 election results but felt compelled to act due to his belief that the election had been tampered with.
Cole revealed that he set the devices to detonate 60 minutes after placement, intending for them to explode. However, the bombs did not detonate, and he expressed relief upon learning this, asserting that he did not want to cause harm. After seeing himself in FBI-released videos, Cole disposed of his bomb-making materials and refrained from discussing his actions over the subsequent years.
Prosecutors have emphasized the potential danger posed by Cole's actions, noting that his choice of targets risked the lives of innocent pedestrians, office workers, law enforcement, first responders, and national political leaders. They argue that it was due to luck, not lack of effort, that the devices failed to detonate and no one was harmed.
Cole is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday for a detention hearing at 1 p.m. His attorneys have not provided a comment on the case.
