Israel Reportedly Detains Palestinian Islamic Jihad Operative in Gaza Amid Search for Hostage's Remains
Israeli forces have reportedly detained a Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative in Gaza linked to the abduction of an Israeli police officer, as efforts continue to recover the officer's remains.
Israeli forces have reportedly detained a member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) in Gaza, suspected of involvement in the abduction of Israeli police Master Sgt. Ran Gvili, whose remains are still unaccounted for. According to sources cited by Asharq al-Awsat, the operative, affiliated with PIJ's al-Quds Brigades, was apprehended in Gaza City's eastern Zeitoun neighborhood, approximately one kilometer west of the 'Yellow Line' demarcation. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have not commented on the report.
The detained individual's name was reportedly included in a list provided by Israel to mediators in Cairo, identifying those believed responsible for Gvili's capture. Israeli officials have accused PIJ of retaining Gvili's remains and criticized Hamas for not pressuring PIJ to release them. PIJ has claimed it transferred the body to Hamas's al-Qassam Brigades early in the conflict, while Hamas sources assert they no longer possess the remains, citing Israeli operations complicating recovery efforts.
Under the October ceasefire agreement, Hamas was to release all hostages and return the remains of deceased captives within 72 hours. While 27 of 28 bodies have been returned, Gvili's remains are still missing. His family continues to advocate for their return, with his mother, Talik Gvili, stating, 'No moving on to the second phase, and not anything, until he's home.'
In related developments, the IDF has denied allegations of unilaterally shifting the 'Yellow Line' deeper into Gaza. The military stated it is marking the line in accordance with terrain and operational assessments, adhering to boundaries defined under the ceasefire agreement. This response follows reports suggesting the line's expansion beyond initial demarcations, potentially increasing the area under Israeli control.
The 'Yellow Line' serves as a demarcation under the ceasefire, with Israeli forces controlling areas to its east, north, and south, while Hamas is prohibited from crossing it. The IDF continues operations to dismantle remaining militant infrastructure and address immediate threats in the region.
