Michigan has appointed Kyle Whittingham as its new head football coach, signing him to a five-year contract averaging $8.2 million per year. Whittingham, 66, previously led the University of Utah's football program for 21 seasons, amassing a 177-88 record and securing three conference championships.
Whittingham's tenure at Utah included an undefeated 2008 season capped by a Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama. He is recognized as Utah's all-time wins leader and ranks among the top active FBS coaches in both tenure and victories.
Upon announcing his departure from Utah earlier this month, Whittingham stated, "I'm a free agent, I'm in the transfer portal."
Michigan's coaching vacancy arose following the dismissal of Sherrone Moore earlier this month due to violations of university policy.
Whittingham will not coach Utah in the upcoming Las Vegas Bowl against Nebraska on December 31.
