US and Ukraine Report Productive Talks in Miami Amid Ongoing Conflict
US and Ukrainian envoys held constructive discussions in Miami, focusing on a 20-point peace plan, while separate US-Russia talks continue amid ongoing hostilities.
US and Ukrainian envoys have concluded a series of "productive and constructive" discussions in Miami, aiming to advance efforts to end the nearly four-year conflict in Ukraine. The meetings, led by US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov, centered on aligning positions regarding a 20-point peace plan, a multilateral security guarantee framework, a US security guarantee framework for Ukraine, and an economic and prosperity plan.
In a joint statement, Witkoff and Umerov emphasized their shared priority to "stop the killing, ensure guaranteed security, and create conditions for Ukraine's recovery, stability, and long-term prosperity."
Concurrently, separate talks are underway in Miami between US officials and Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev. Witkoff noted that these discussions have also been "productive and constructive," with Russia expressing full commitment to achieving peace in Ukraine.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, hostilities persist. On Monday, a Ukrainian drone attack damaged two vessels and two piers in Russia's southern Krasnodar region, leading to a significant fire. Russian authorities reported that all crew members were safely evacuated, and some reports suggest that oil infrastructure was targeted.
The ongoing negotiations follow weeks of intensified diplomatic activity, initiated by the leak of a 28-point US peace plan that raised concerns among Ukraine and its European allies for appearing to favor Russia.
US intelligence reports continue to warn that Russian President Vladimir Putin aims to capture all of Ukraine and reclaim parts of Europe that were part of the former Soviet empire.
In a recent interview, Putin stated, "There won't be any operations if you treat us with respect, if you respect our interests just as we've always tried to respect yours."
As diplomatic efforts continue, the situation on the ground remains volatile, with both sides engaging in military actions while seeking a path to peace.
