Kennedy Center Renamed to Honor Presidents Trump and Kennedy
The Kennedy Center's board has voted to rename the institution to include President Donald Trump's name, a decision that has sparked legal and familial opposition.
The Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has voted to rename the institution as "The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts." The decision was announced by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who stated that the unanimous vote recognized President Trump's contributions to the center's revitalization.
However, Representative Joyce Beatty, an ex officio board member, contested the unanimity of the vote, claiming she was muted during the meeting and unable to voice her opposition.
Members of the Kennedy family have also expressed strong opposition. Former Representative Joe Kennedy III emphasized that the center is a living memorial to President Kennedy, established by federal law, and cannot be renamed without congressional approval.
Legal experts have noted that the 1964 legislation designating the center as a memorial to President Kennedy does not grant the board authority to change its name.
Despite the controversy, workers began installing President Trump's name on the building's exterior the day after the announcement.
The renaming has ignited a broader debate about the intersection of politics and cultural institutions, with critics arguing that the move undermines the center's original purpose as a tribute to President Kennedy.
