Community Mourns Youngest Victim of Bondi Beach Shooting as American Rabbi Recovers
The Bondi Beach community mourns 10-year-old Matilda, the youngest victim of the recent shooting, while American Rabbi Leibel Lazaroff recovers from injuries sustained during the attack.
Hundreds gathered in Sydney to mourn 10-year-old Matilda, the youngest victim of the recent Bondi Beach shooting that claimed 15 lives during a Hanukkah celebration. Matilda, remembered for her love of animals and dancing, was laid to rest amid bee-themed tributes symbolizing her middle name, Bee.
Among the wounded is American Rabbi Leibel Lazaroff, 20, who was volunteering at the event. He sustained gunshot wounds to his stomach and thighs while assisting others during the attack. His parents, Manya and Rabbi Yossi Lazaroff, traveled from Texas to be by his side. Manya recounted the harrowing moment they learned of the attack:
"In the middle of the night, we got, someone came to our door to tell us that there was a terrorist attack, and that Leibel was — people knew he was shot, but did not know what had happened to him."
Leibel's father shared that his son attempted to aid a wounded police officer by using his shirt as a tourniquet and requested the officer's firearm to confront the gunmen. During this act of bravery, Leibel was shot. His mother described him as "a firecracker... brave, strong, feisty, very feisty, and someone who's very quick thinking."
The attack, allegedly carried out by father-and-son duo Sajid and Naveed Akram, has been linked to Islamic State ideology. Sajid was killed at the scene; Naveed has been charged with multiple offenses, including murder and terrorism. In response, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged to introduce stricter hate speech laws and enhance security measures to combat rising antisemitism.
The Bondi Beach community continues to grieve, holding memorials and vigils to honor the victims and support the survivors of this tragic event.
