Oracle's Data Center Funding Setback Triggers AI Sector Sell-Off
Oracle's $10 billion Michigan data center project faces uncertainty as Blue Owl Capital withdraws funding, leading to a significant decline in AI-related stocks.
Oracle's ambitious $10 billion data center project in Saline Township, Michigan, intended to support OpenAI, has encountered a significant setback. Blue Owl Capital, the primary financial backer for Oracle's largest U.S. data center projects, has withdrawn from the deal due to concerns over less favorable lease terms compared to previous agreements.
In response, Oracle stated that its development partner, Related Digital, selected an alternative equity partner from a competitive group, which did not include Blue Owl. Related Digital affirmed that the project is progressing on schedule and expects to deliver it as planned.
Despite these assurances, the news unsettled investors, leading to a sharp decline in Oracle's stock, which fell 5.4% on Wednesday. This downturn contributed to broader market concerns about the sustainability of AI infrastructure investments. Other AI-related stocks also suffered, with Nvidia dropping 3.8% and Advanced Micro Devices declining 5.2%. The Nasdaq Composite slid more than 1.8%, and the S&P 500 fell 1.2%.
Analysts remain cautiously optimistic about the AI sector's long-term prospects. John Higgins of Capital Economics noted that while the AI rally is expected to continue through 2026, valuations may become stretched, potentially leading to a correction by 2027.
Oracle's recent challenges, including increased capital expenditures and rising debt levels, have intensified investor scrutiny. The company's stock has declined over 15% since its latest quarterly earnings report, reflecting growing concerns about its aggressive AI expansion strategy.
