Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a 47-year-old professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was fatally shot at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, on Monday night. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning, according to the Norfolk District Attorney's Office.
Loureiro served as the director of MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center and was a professor in both the Nuclear Science and Engineering and Physics departments. He joined MIT in 2016 and was appointed director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center in 2024.
Originally from Viseu, Portugal, Loureiro earned his undergraduate and master's degrees in physics from Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon and completed his PhD at Imperial College London in 2005. His research focused on plasma behavior, including turbulence and magnetic reconnection, contributing significantly to the understanding of fusion energy and astrophysical phenomena.
MIT President Sally Kornbluth described Loureiro's death as a "shocking loss." Dennis Whyte, an engineering professor and former director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, stated, "He shone a bright light as a mentor, friend, teacher, colleague and leader, and was universally admired for his articulate, compassionate manner."
The Norfolk District Attorney's Office has initiated a homicide investigation. As of Tuesday afternoon, no suspects had been taken into custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
