United Airlines Flight Returns to Dulles After Engine Failure During Takeoff
A United Airlines flight bound for Tokyo returned safely to Dulles International Airport following an engine failure during takeoff, with no injuries reported.
A United Airlines flight bound for Tokyo returned safely to Dulles International Airport on Saturday after experiencing an engine failure during takeoff. The Boeing 777-200ER, carrying 275 passengers and 15 crew members, encountered the issue shortly after departure at approximately 12:20 p.m. local time.
The engine failure resulted in a piece of the engine cover separating and igniting a brush fire near the runway. Airport fire crews promptly extinguished the fire, and no injuries were reported among those on board.
United Airlines stated, "Shortly after takeoff, United flight 803 returned to Washington Dulles and landed safely to address the loss of power in one engine. There were no reported injuries."
The airline arranged for passengers to continue their journey to Tokyo on a different aircraft later that day. The Federal Aviation Administration has initiated an investigation into the incident.
