Michigan Dismisses Head Coach Sherrone Moore Amid Misconduct Allegations
The University of Michigan has terminated head football coach Sherrone Moore following an internal investigation into an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Moore was subsequently detained by police in connection with an alleged assault.
The University of Michigan has terminated head football coach Sherrone Moore, effective immediately, after an internal investigation uncovered "credible evidence" of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Athletic Director Warde Manuel stated, "This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior."
Shortly after his dismissal, Moore, 39, was detained by police in Saline, Michigan, and transferred to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges. Authorities have not released details of the incident, citing the ongoing investigation.
Moore's tenure as head coach lasted two seasons, during which he led the Wolverines to a 16-8 record. This season, the team finished 9-3 and is scheduled to play No. 13 Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31. Associate Head Coach Biff Poggi has been appointed interim head coach for the upcoming bowl game.
Moore's time at Michigan was marked by controversy, including a two-game suspension earlier this year related to a sign-stealing scandal. The NCAA imposed additional penalties on the program, including a substantial fine.
The university has not disclosed further details about the internal investigation or the nature of the alleged relationship. Moore has not publicly commented on his dismissal or the subsequent police investigation.
