Lane Kiffin Departs Ole Miss for LSU Head Coaching Position
Lane Kiffin has left Ole Miss to become the head coach at LSU, with Pete Golding stepping in as his replacement.
Lane Kiffin has officially accepted the head coaching position at Louisiana State University (LSU), departing from his role at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). Kiffin, 50, led the Rebels to an 11-1 record this season, marking the first time in school history the team achieved double-digit wins in three consecutive seasons.
In a statement, Kiffin expressed his desire to continue coaching Ole Miss through the College Football Playoff but noted that his request was denied by athletic director Keith Carter.
Ole Miss has promoted defensive coordinator Pete Golding to head coach. Golding, who joined the Rebels in 2023 after serving as defensive coordinator at Alabama, has been instrumental in developing one of the nation's top defenses.
LSU's offer to Kiffin reportedly includes a seven-year contract worth approximately $12 million annually, positioning him among the highest-paid coaches in college football.
Kiffin's departure comes shortly after LSU terminated head coach Brian Kelly without cause, entitling Kelly to a $54 million buyout.
Kiffin's coaching career includes tenures at Tennessee, USC, and Florida Atlantic, where he rebuilt his career before joining Ole Miss in 2019.
