Airlines Implement Software Updates on Airbus A320 Fleet Following Safety Directive
Airlines worldwide are updating software on Airbus A320 aircraft after a safety directive addressing potential flight control data corruption due to solar radiation exposure.
Airlines globally are undertaking software updates on Airbus A320 aircraft following a safety directive addressing potential flight control data corruption caused by intense solar radiation exposure. This action comes after an incident on October 30, 2025, where a JetBlue A320 experienced a sudden altitude drop, leading to injuries and an emergency landing.
Airbus's analysis revealed that intense solar radiation could corrupt critical flight control data on A320 family aircraft. In response, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mandated immediate software updates to mitigate this risk.
American Airlines, operating approximately 480 A320 family aircraft, identified 209 requiring the update. The airline expects to complete the majority of updates by Friday, with a few extending into Saturday. While some delays are anticipated, the airline is focused on limiting cancellations, emphasizing that safety remains the overriding priority.
Other carriers are also addressing the directive. All Nippon Airways canceled 65 domestic flights on Saturday to perform the updates, with potential additional cancellations on Sunday. Air India reported that over 40% of its affected aircraft have been updated without cancellations. Delta Air Lines expects the issue to affect fewer than 50 of its A321neo aircraft, while United Airlines has six affected planes and anticipates minor disruptions. Hawaiian Airlines reported no impact.
The software update is being implemented during a busy travel period, coinciding with the post-Thanksgiving holiday weekend in the United States. Despite the timing, airlines are working to minimize passenger inconvenience while ensuring compliance with the safety directive.
Airbus, headquartered in France, is one of the world's leading aircraft manufacturers. The A320 family is the world's best-selling single-aisle aircraft series, with over 12,000 units delivered since 1988.
