Blizzard Conditions and Heavy Snow Impact Michigan Through Thanksgiving
Michigan faces blizzard conditions with heavy snowfall and strong winds, leading to hazardous travel and power outages.
Michigan is experiencing severe winter weather, with blizzard conditions affecting the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Michigan. The National Weather Service reports that areas such as the Keweenaw Peninsula are under blizzard warnings, with snowfall rates exceeding one inch per hour and wind gusts over 45 mph, significantly reducing visibility.
The storm is expected to bring an additional 12 to 18 inches of snow through Thursday evening in the hardest-hit regions. Counties including Keweenaw, Ontonagon, Gogebic, and parts of Baraga and Marquette are forecasted to receive the heaviest accumulations.
In the Lower Peninsula, Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for much of northern Michigan, with 6 to 12 inches of snow expected through Friday. Localized amounts of 18 to 24 inches are possible from southern Antrim to western Crawford County.
Strong winds, with gusts up to 50 mph, are contributing to whiteout conditions and making travel extremely hazardous. High Wind Warnings are in place for lakeshore areas of western Lower Michigan until Thursday morning, where gusts could reach 60 mph. The combination of heavy snow and strong winds may lead to downed trees and power outages.
On Lake Superior, Storm Warnings are active until midnight Wednesday for offshore waters from Keweenaw Bay to Grand Marais, with wind gusts of 57 mph and waves of 15 to 20 feet. Gale Warnings remain in effect for all Lake Superior waters through Thursday night, with waves persisting at 12 to 18 feet in the eastern half of the lake. Minor lakeshore flooding and beach erosion are possible along the Lake Superior shoreline through Thursday.
Lake effect snow is expected to diminish by Friday as the storm system moves away and high pressure briefly settles over the region. However, another winter system is anticipated to approach over the weekend.
