Trump Dispatches Envoys to Russia and Ukraine Amid Peace Negotiation Efforts

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that his administration's plan to end the conflict in Ukraine has been "fine-tuned," and he is dispatching envoy Steve Witkoff to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while Army Secretary Dan Driscoll will engage with Ukrainian officials.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump indicated that he might meet with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but only after further progress in negotiations. He described the current 28-point plan as a "concept" still under development.

The proposed peace plan has faced criticism for favoring Russian interests, particularly its call for Ukraine to cede the entire Donbas region. Ukrainian officials have expressed concerns over these terms.

Trump mentioned that Witkoff is expected to meet with Putin in Moscow next week, potentially accompanied by his son-in-law, Jared Kushner. He expressed optimism about the plan's reception, stating, "People are starting to realize it's a good deal for both parties."

Addressing the plan's requirement for Ukraine to cede territory, Trump suggested that Russian forces might eventually seize the land regardless, implying that a negotiated settlement could be more beneficial for Ukraine.

The plan also includes provisions for Ukraine to reduce its military size and forgo NATO membership, while receiving security guarantees and economic support. Ukrainian officials are currently evaluating these proposals, emphasizing the importance of sovereignty and public safety.

In related developments, Driscoll has been actively involved in negotiations, including recent talks in Abu Dhabi with Russian officials. These discussions aim to build upon initial agreements reached with Ukraine on a draft peace plan.
