DOJ Seeks Unsealing of Epstein Grand Jury Transcripts Following Transparency Act
The Department of Justice has requested a federal court in Florida to unseal grand jury transcripts related to Jeffrey Epstein's initial federal investigation, citing the recently enacted Epstein Transparency Act.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has petitioned a federal court in Florida to unseal grand jury transcripts from the 2005 and 2007 federal investigations into Jeffrey Epstein. This move follows the recent enactment of the Epstein Transparency Act, which mandates the public release of unclassified records related to Epstein. The DOJ emphasized that grand jury materials are not exempt from this law and has requested a swift court ruling to comply with the Act's 30-day deadline. The department also plans to redact victim-related and personal identifying information to protect privacy. This request comes after previous attempts to unseal similar materials were denied by judges in New York and Florida, who cited the importance of maintaining grand jury secrecy. Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, and his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for related offenses.
