European Leaders Call for Revisions to U.S. Ukraine Peace Plan

During the G20 summit in Johannesburg, European leaders expressed reservations about the U.S. administration's 28-point peace plan aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a joint statement, leaders from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Finland, Norway, Canada, and Japan acknowledged the plan's foundational elements but emphasized the necessity for further refinement to ensure a just and lasting peace.

The leaders underscored the principle that national borders must not be altered by force and voiced concerns over proposed limitations on Ukraine's armed forces, which they argued could leave the nation susceptible to future aggression. They also highlighted that any provisions involving the European Union or NATO would require the explicit consent of their respective members.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, addressing the situation, stated that real peace is always based on guaranteed security and justice. He emphasized that Ukraine's representatives are committed to protecting the nation's interests and preventing further invasions.

The U.S. plan, which has been met with cautious reception, reportedly includes provisions for Ukraine to cede certain territories and reduce its military capabilities. European leaders have expressed their readiness to engage in discussions to ensure that any future peace agreement is sustainable and respects Ukraine's sovereignty.
