Russian Missile and Drone Strikes Kill 25 in Ukraine Amid U.S. Peace Efforts
A significant Russian aerial assault on Ukraine resulted in at least 25 fatalities, including children, as U.S. officials seek to revive peace negotiations.
A massive Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine overnight resulted in at least 25 fatalities, including two children, marking one of the most significant aerial assaults since the conflict began in February 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched 476 drones and 48 cruise and ballistic missiles, with several penetrating Ukraine's air defenses. Explosions and fires were reported near the eastern city of Kharkiv and in the western city of Lviv, close to the Polish border. The majority of casualties occurred in Ternopil, where two high-rise apartment buildings and energy facilities were struck, leading to widespread power outages as temperatures dropped.
During a visit to Turkey, President Zelenskyy emphasized the need for increased international pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating, "Every brazen attack against ordinary life indicates that the pressure on Russia is insufficient." He discussed with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the potential for Turkey to help diplomatically isolate Russia and support Ukraine's pursuit of a just peace.
Concurrently, U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll was in Ukraine as part of a delegation aiming to restart peace talks. New U.S. sanctions targeting Russia's oil industry are set to take effect on Friday, intended to compel Russia to negotiate.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that while there are no immediate plans for President Putin to engage in talks, the Russian leader remains open to dialogue as the conflict continues into its fourth winter.
