Attorney General Assigns Jay Clayton to Lead Investigation into Epstein's Ties to Prominent Democrats

Summary

Attorney General Pam Bondi has appointed U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton to investigate Jeffrey Epstein's connections with prominent Democrats, following President Donald Trump's directive.

Attorney General Pam Bondi has appointed U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton to lead a federal investigation into Jeffrey Epstein's connections with prominent Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton. This decision follows President Donald Trump's directive to examine Epstein's relationships with Clinton, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, and financial institutions such as JPMorgan Chase.

Bondi announced the appointment on X, stating, "Jay Clayton is one of the most capable and trusted prosecutors in the country, and I've asked him to take the lead. As with all matters, the Department will pursue this with urgency and integrity to deliver answers to the American people."

Clayton, who previously served as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission from 2017 to 2020, was appointed as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York in April 2025.

The investigation comes amid the release of nearly 23,000 pages of documents from Epstein's estate by congressional Republicans, which have intensified scrutiny of Epstein's associations.

In response to the investigation, a spokesperson for JPMorgan Chase stated, "The government had damning information about his crimes and failed to share it with us or other banks. We regret any association we had with the man, but did not help him commit his heinous acts."

The Justice Department has not specified the scope of the investigation or the potential charges under consideration. The inquiry is expected to focus on Epstein's interactions with the named individuals and institutions to determine any possible misconduct.
