MLB and Sportsbooks Limit Bets on Individual Pitches Following Indictments

Summary

Major League Baseball and leading sportsbooks have agreed to cap bets on individual pitches at $200 and exclude them from parlays, following the indictment of two Cleveland Guardians pitchers accused of pitch rigging.

In response to recent allegations involving two Cleveland Guardians pitchers, Major League Baseball (MLB) and its authorized gaming operators have implemented new betting restrictions. Bets on individual pitches will now be capped at $200 and excluded from parlay bets. This decision, agreed upon by sportsbooks representing over 98% of the U.S. betting market, aims to mitigate integrity risks associated with pitch-level wagers.

MLB stated that bets focusing on outcomes like pitch velocity and ball or strike calls present heightened integrity risks because they can be influenced by a single player and may not affect the game's overall outcome. The league emphasized that these measures are designed to reduce incentives for misconduct by limiting potential payouts and preventing circumvention of the new limits.

The policy change follows the indictment of Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz. Both players are accused of accepting bribes to manipulate pitch outcomes, enabling bettors in the Dominican Republic to win at least $460,000. The charges include wire fraud conspiracy, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery, and money laundering conspiracy.

Ortiz appeared in federal court in Boston, where he was released on a $500,000 bond under conditions including surrendering his passport and restricting his travel. His attorney, Chris Georgalis, asserted Ortiz's innocence, stating that he has never improperly influenced a game. Clase's lawyer, Michael J. Ferrara, also declared his client's innocence, emphasizing Clase's dedication to baseball and his team.

These developments come amid broader concerns about gambling-related integrity in professional sports, with MLB continuing to cooperate with federal authorities in ongoing investigations.
