Delta Air Lines is reducing flights at 40 major U.S. airports in response to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) directive aimed at addressing air traffic control staffing shortages during the ongoing government shutdown.
The FAA has mandated a phased reduction in flight operations, starting with a 4% cut on November 7, escalating to 10% by November 14. This measure affects flights between approximately 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. at the designated airports.
As of November 9, Delta reported over 320 mainline and 150 Delta Connection cancellations, with additional delays and cancellations anticipated due to compounded constraints from air traffic control staffing shortages.
Delta is offering flexibility to customers traveling through the impacted markets, allowing changes, cancellations, or refunds without penalty during this period. Customers are advised to check flight status and explore options via delta.com or the Fly Delta app.
The flight reductions are intended to maintain safety across the national airspace system amid the challenges posed by the government shutdown.
