A high-speed police pursuit in Tampa ended tragically when a vehicle crashed into a crowd outside a bar, resulting in four fatalities and eleven injuries.
Early Saturday morning, a high-speed police pursuit in Tampa's Ybor City district concluded with a vehicle crashing into a crowd outside a bar, resulting in four fatalities and eleven injuries. The incident began around 12:40 a.m. when Tampa Police Air Service observed a vehicle driving recklessly on I-275. The driver, identified as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, continued at high speed, exiting the interstate at Doyle Carlton Drive. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) attempted a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver near Palm Avenue and Nebraska Avenue, but it was unsuccessful. As the vehicle approached 7th Avenue, FHP disengaged the pursuit. Shortly thereafter, Sampson lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a group of pedestrians outside a bar in the 1500 block of East 7th Avenue. Three individuals died at the scene, and a fourth succumbed to injuries at a hospital. Among the eleven injured, one remains in critical condition, while eight others are stable. Two individuals with minor injuries declined treatment at the scene. All victims are adults. Sampson was detained at the scene and has been charged with four counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated fleeing or eluding with serious bodily injury or death. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw stated, "What happened this morning was a senseless tragedy; our hearts are with the loved ones of the victims and all those who were impacted." The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the ongoing investigation.
