Russia Launches Extensive Missile and Drone Attacks on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure

Summary

Russia conducted a large-scale assault on Ukrainian cities, targeting energy facilities with missiles and drones, leading to fires and power outages.

Russia launched a significant missile and drone attack on multiple Ukrainian cities overnight on November 8, targeting energy infrastructure and causing widespread disruptions. The assault involved Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, as well as cruise and ballistic missiles, striking regions including Kremenchuk, Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv. Communities in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Poltava oblasts were also affected, with explosions reported in Sumy and Odesa Oblast.

In Kyiv, explosions were heard shortly before 4:30 a.m. local time. Air defenses were activated in response to the drone attacks. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a fire in the Pechersky district caused by falling drone debris; the fire was later extinguished. The State Emergency Service noted that four small trucks caught fire, and two structures along with nearby parked cars sustained damage.

Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk described the assault as a "massive" combined missile and drone attack targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, resulting in emergency power outages across several regions. She stated that the consequences are being assessed and that outages will be restored "once the situation in the energy system stabilizes."

This attack is part of a series of intensified strikes by Russia on Ukrainian energy facilities, aiming to disrupt the country's power supply ahead of winter. Previous attacks in early October had already incapacitated approximately 60% of Ukraine’s gas production sites.
