Louvre Jewel Heist Executed by Petty Criminals, Not Organized Crime, Says Prosecutor

The recent $102 million jewel theft from Paris's Louvre Museum was carried out by small-time criminals from local suburbs, not professional organized crime figures, according to Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau. On October 19, four individuals used a basket lift to access the museum's second floor, smashed a window, and within seven minutes, stole eight pieces of the French Crown Jewels from the Apollo Gallery. The thieves then fled on scooters.
Beccuau stated that the suspects, including the girlfriend of one of the alleged robbers, are not typical organized crime professionals. "These are clearly local people. They all live more or less in Seine-Saint-Denis," she said, referring to a low-income area north of Paris.
The suspects' amateurish approach was evident as they dropped Empress Eugénie's crown during their escape, left tools at the scene, and failed to set fire to the movers' truck before fleeing. Two men, aged 34 and 39, were arrested shortly after the heist; one was detained at Charles de Gaulle Airport attempting to board a flight to Algeria. Both reside in Aubervilliers, a northern suburb of Paris, and have partially admitted their involvement.
Two additional suspects, a 37-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman, were arrested on October 29 and charged on Saturday. Beccuau noted that the 37-year-old man is believed to be part of the four-person group that carried out the heist, based on DNA evidence found in the moving truck. He has a record of 11 criminal convictions for various offenses, including aggravated theft. The woman, his partner and mother of their children, also had DNA traces found in the truck, though these may have been transferred indirectly. Both deny involvement in the heist.
Beccuau indicated that at least one suspect remains at large and did not rule out the possibility of additional accomplices. Three individuals arrested alongside the couple on October 29 have been released without charge.
