Woman Charged in Connection with Louvre Jewel Heist

Summary

A 38-year-old woman has been charged with complicity in the recent €88 million jewel theft at Paris's Louvre Museum.

A 38-year-old woman has been charged with complicity in organized theft and criminal conspiracy following the recent jewel heist at Paris's Louvre Museum. She appeared before a magistrate, who ordered her to remain in custody. The woman was among five individuals arrested earlier this week; one has since been released without charge.

The theft occurred on October 19, when four men executed a swift daylight robbery, stealing jewels valued at €88 million from the museum's Galerie d'Apollon. The suspects used a stolen vehicle-mounted mechanical lift to access a balcony near the River Seine, then employed a disc cutter to breach display cases housing the jewelry. The entire operation inside the museum lasted four minutes, after which the thieves fled on two scooters before switching to cars.

Two men previously arrested have been charged with theft and criminal conspiracy, having "partially recognized" their involvement in the heist. A fourth suspect remains at large. The stolen jewels have not yet been recovered.

In response to the incident, security measures have been tightened around France's cultural institutions. The Louvre has transferred some of its most precious jewels to the Bank of France for safekeeping.

French Culture Minister Rachida Dati acknowledged that the museum had suffered from a "chronic, structural underestimation of the risk of intrusions and theft" for over two decades, contributing to the recent heist. A preliminary investigation cited outdated security equipment, disorganized safeguards, and ineffective protocols as critical failures.

The Louvre Museum reopened to visitors three days after the robbery, with the Apollo Gallery remaining closed. Museum director Laurence des Cars offered her resignation following the incident, but Minister Dati declined it.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities continuing their efforts to apprehend the remaining suspect and recover the stolen jewels.
