King Charles Initiates Process to Strip Prince Andrew of Titles and Evict Him from Royal Lodge

Summary

King Charles has begun proceedings to remove Prince Andrew's titles and has served notice for him to vacate Royal Lodge.

King Charles has initiated formal proceedings to remove his brother, Prince Andrew, from his royal titles and has served notice for him to vacate Royal Lodge, his residence in Windsor Great Park. This decision follows renewed scrutiny over Andrew's association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and allegations made in Virginia Giuffre's posthumous memoir, "Nobody's Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice."

In a statement, Buckingham Palace announced: "His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew." Consequently, Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. The statement further noted that his lease on Royal Lodge, which had provided him with legal protection to remain in residence, has been terminated, and he will move to alternative private accommodation.

Despite these actions, Andrew remains eighth in line to the British throne. However, his daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, will retain their titles as they are the daughters of the son of a sovereign, in line with rules set out by King George V in 1917.

The Palace emphasized that these measures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding Andrew's continued denial of the allegations against him. The statement also conveyed the royal family's sympathies with victims and survivors of abuse.

Andrew's ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, who has lived with him at Royal Lodge for the past 20 years, is also expected to move out and is making her own arrangements.

The British government was consulted on the King's decisions and has expressed support for the moves. The last time a prince had his title removed was over a century ago, when Prince Charles Edward had the title of Duke of Albany stripped from him by the British parliament under the Titles Deprivation Act 1917.
