Israel Conducts Airstrikes in Gaza Amid Ceasefire Violations
Israeli airstrikes in Gaza follow accusations of ceasefire breaches by Hamas, resulting in significant casualties and escalating tensions.
Israeli forces launched airstrikes across Gaza on Tuesday, targeting areas including Gaza City, Beit Lahia, al-Bureij, Nuseirat, and Khan Younis. The strikes resulted in at least 33 Palestinian fatalities, as reported by Gaza's Civil Defence agency and hospital officials. The attacks damaged homes, schools, and residential buildings.
The escalation followed accusations from Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz that Hamas violated the US-brokered ceasefire by attacking Israeli soldiers in Gaza and failing to return the bodies of deceased hostages as agreed. Katz stated, "Hamas will pay many times over for attacking the soldiers and for violating the agreement to return the fallen hostages."
Hamas denied involvement in the alleged attack and reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire. The group condemned the Israeli airstrikes, describing them as a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement.
Despite the renewed violence, US Vice-President JD Vance expressed optimism about the ceasefire's durability, acknowledging minor skirmishes but believing the overall peace would hold.
The ceasefire, initiated on October 10, 2025, as part of President Donald Trump's 20-point Gaza peace plan, required Hamas to return all living and deceased hostages within 72 hours. While 20 living hostages were released on October 13 in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and detainees, disputes over the return of deceased hostages have persisted.
The recent airstrikes and mutual accusations have intensified tensions, raising concerns about the stability of the ceasefire and the potential for further escalation in the region.
