Independent candidate Catherine Connolly is set to win the Irish presidency following her rival's concession.
Independent candidate Catherine Connolly is on track to become Ireland's next president after her opponent, Heather Humphreys of the center-right Fine Gael party, conceded defeat. Vote counting from Friday's election is nearing completion, with Connolly expected to secure over 60% of the vote, more than double Humphreys' tally.
Humphreys acknowledged the outcome, stating, "It does appear likely that Catherine Connolly will be elected and we now move on to the job of working with her as a government."
Connolly, 68, a former barrister and clinical psychologist, has served in parliament since 2016. Her campaign, backed by left-leaning parties including Sinn Féin, the Labour Party, and the Social Democrats, resonated particularly with younger voters. She is known for her strong pro-Palestine stance and critiques of European Union military expenditures.
The Irish presidency is largely ceremonial, with responsibilities such as appointing the Taoiseach (prime minister), signing laws, and representing Ireland abroad. Connolly will succeed Michael D. Higgins, who has completed the maximum two seven-year terms since 2011.
If confirmed, Connolly will become Ireland's 10th president and the third woman to hold the office.
