Ukrainian Drone Strikes Disrupt Russian Gas Plant Operations

Ukrainian drones struck the Orenburg gas processing plant in southern Russia, igniting a fire and leading to the suspension of gas intake from Kazakhstan, according to Russian and Kazakh authorities. The facility, operated by state-owned Gazprom, is among the world's largest, with an annual capacity of 45 billion cubic meters. Regional Governor Yevgeny Solntsev reported that the attack damaged a workshop but resulted in no casualties. The Kazakh Energy Ministry confirmed the plant's temporary inability to process Kazakh gas due to the incident. Ukraine's General Staff acknowledged the strike, noting significant damage to a gas processing unit. This action is part of Ukraine's intensified efforts to target Russian energy infrastructure, which it claims funds Moscow's military operations.

In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that Ukraine might need to cede territory to Russia to achieve peace. In a Fox News interview, Trump stated, "Well, he's going to take something," referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin's territorial gains. He added, "They fought and he has a lot of property. He's won certain property." These remarks indicate a potential shift in the U.S. stance on the conflict. Trump also expressed hesitation about supplying Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles, citing concerns over depleting U.S. weapon reserves.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian prosecutors accused Russia of modifying aerial-guided bombs to target deeper into Ukrainian territory. Authorities in Kharkiv reported that Russia used a new rocket-powered aerial bomb, the UMPB-5R, capable of traveling up to 130 kilometers, in an attack on the city of Lozava. Additionally, Russian drone strikes in the Dnipropetrovsk region injured at least 11 people and damaged multiple buildings. Ukraine's General Staff also claimed a separate drone strike hit Russia's Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery in the Samara region, causing a fire and damaging refining units. Russian authorities have not immediately acknowledged this claim.

Russia's Defense Ministry reported that its air defense forces shot down 45 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 12 over the Samara region, one over the Orenburg region, and 11 over the Saratov region. Conversely, Ukraine's air force stated that Russia launched 62 drones into Ukrainian territory during the same period, with 40 being intercepted or diverted by electronic jamming.

These developments underscore the escalating use of drone warfare and long-range weaponry by both nations, targeting critical energy infrastructure and deepening the conflict.
