U.S. Halts Aid to Colombia Amid Drug Production Dispute
The United States has ceased financial aid to Colombia, citing the country's alleged inaction against drug production, while Colombia accuses the U.S. of violating its sovereignty.
The United States has ceased financial aid to Colombia, alleging that Colombian President Gustavo Petro has not taken sufficient action to curb drug production. President Donald Trump announced the decision on Sunday, stating that Petro "does nothing to stop" the production of drugs destined for the U.S. and is "strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs."
This move follows the U.S. administration's recent decertification of Colombia as a cooperative partner in the fight against drugs, marking the first such designation in nearly three decades. Despite this, the U.S. had previously issued a waiver to continue aid, citing national interests.
In response, President Petro accused the U.S. of violating Colombia's sovereignty and claimed that U.S. forces killed a Colombian fisherman during a recent operation. Petro stated that U.S. officials "have committed a murder and violated our sovereignty in territorial waters," identifying the fisherman as Alejandro Carranza, who he asserted had "no ties to the drug trade."
The U.S. military confirmed a strike on a vessel in the Caribbean, which President Trump described as a "drug-carrying submarine" loaded with fentanyl and other narcotics. The operation resulted in two fatalities and the capture of two survivors, who are being repatriated to their home countries, Ecuador and Colombia.
These developments have further strained relations between the two nations, with Colombia halting arms purchases from the U.S. in response to the decertification and aid suspension. Interior Minister Armando Benedetti announced that "weapons will not be purchased from the United States" moving forward.
The escalating tensions underscore the challenges in U.S.-Colombia relations, particularly concerning strategies to combat drug trafficking and production.
