President Trump Commutes Former Rep. George Santos' Prison Sentence

Summary

President Donald Trump has commuted the prison sentence of former Representative George Santos, ordering his immediate release.

President Donald Trump announced on Friday the commutation of former Representative George Santos' prison sentence, ordering his immediate release. Santos, a New York Republican, had been serving a seven-year term for fraud and identity theft convictions.

"George Santos was somewhat of a 'rogue,' but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren't forced to serve seven years in prison," Trump stated on his social media platform. "Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!"

Santos was sentenced in April after pleading guilty to charges including wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Prosecutors alleged he deceived donors and misused campaign funds for personal expenses. He began serving his sentence in July at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, New Jersey.

The commutation follows appeals from figures such as Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who argued that Santos' punishment was excessive. Greene stated, "George Santos never raped anybody, never murdered anybody, is not a child sex-trafficker. Why is he in solitary confinement?" She added, "That is an extreme treatment for someone for the crimes that he was convicted of."

Santos' political career was marked by controversy. Elected in 2022, he served less than a year before being expelled from Congress in December 2023 after a House Ethics Committee report found substantial evidence of misconduct, including using campaign funds for personal purposes and filing false campaign reports.

This commutation is part of a series of clemency actions by President Trump for former Republican politicians. In May, he pardoned former Representative Michael Grimm and former Connecticut Governor John Rowland, both of whom had previous convictions related to corruption scandals.
