Gaza Ceasefire Holds Amid Calls for Aid Access and Return of Hostage Remains
The Gaza ceasefire remains intact as international pressure mounts for increased humanitarian aid access and the return of all Israeli hostage remains.
The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, continues to hold as of Tuesday. However, unresolved issues persist, notably the limited humanitarian aid reaching Gaza and the incomplete return of Israeli hostage remains.
On Monday, Hamas released all 20 surviving Israeli hostages and the bodies of four deceased captives in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees held by Israel. Despite this, the remains of 24 Israeli hostages have yet to be returned, causing distress among their families.
International organizations are urging Israel to open all border crossings to facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Christian Cardon, a spokesperson for the International Red Cross, emphasized the urgency, stating,
"Not all entry points are open to get humanitarian aid inside Gaza. And that's the main issue right now. And that's what humanitarians, including the ICRC, have been calling for in the last hours, is making sure that because of the huge needs, all entry points can be open."
Gaza City Mayor Dr. Yahya al-Sarraj highlighted the dire need for building materials and basic necessities, noting that the city requires heavy machinery, cement, and food supplies to address the starvation experienced during the past two years.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, representing the families of Israeli hostages, expressed frustration over the partial return of remains and called for the suspension of the Israel-Hamas peace agreement until all deceased individuals are returned. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz labeled Hamas's failure to return all bodies as a violation of the agreement, warning of potential consequences for any deliberate delays.
As the ceasefire holds, the international community continues to press for the full implementation of the peace plan, including the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and the return of all hostage remains to Israel.
