Israel Seeks Return of Remaining Hostage Bodies Amid Ceasefire Tensions
Israel urges Hamas to fulfill ceasefire terms by returning the bodies of deceased hostages, as international efforts intensify to locate and recover the remains.
Israel is pressing Hamas to comply with the ceasefire agreement by returning the bodies of deceased hostages still held in Gaza. Despite the release of 15 bodies and all 20 surviving hostages, 13 bodies remain unaccounted for. Hamas claims difficulties in locating some remains due to the extensive destruction in Gaza.
To expedite the recovery process, Egypt has deployed equipment and specialized teams to assist in locating and retrieving the bodies. Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya confirmed that new areas would be searched, stating, "We will not give the occupation a pretext to resume the war." He added that Hamas's weapons are "linked to the presence of occupation and aggression; if the occupation ends, these weapons will be transferred to the state."
U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Hamas to return the bodies promptly, warning of potential action from involved nations if delays continue. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized Israel's autonomy in security decisions, asserting that Israel will determine acceptable international forces and maintain control over its security policies.
The ceasefire agreement, brokered by the U.S., stipulates the return of all hostages, both living and deceased. While Hamas has returned some bodies, the process has been hindered by the challenges of locating remains amid Gaza's devastation. International mediators continue to work towards fulfilling the agreement's terms to maintain the fragile ceasefire.
